Retirement Benefits

Firemen’s Relief and Pension Fund

Your pension is an earned benefit. It is provided under Pennsylvania law and funded through member contributions and City contributions.

This page provides a simple overview of how retirement works.

When Can I Retire?

You are eligible for service retirement when you:

  • Complete 20 years of total service, and
  • Have at least 1 year of service immediately before retiring, and
  • Submit a written retirement application.

Military service (up to 3 years) may count toward eligibility if required contributions are made.

How Is My Pension Calculated?

Your monthly pension is generally:

50% of your average monthly wage during your highest 3 years (or last 36 months) of service.

Your actual calculation depends on the law and contract provisions in effect during your employment.

If you would like a retirement estimate, contact the Pension Office before you retire.

What If I Work More Than 20 Years?

If you:

  • Have more than 20 years of service, and
  • Are at least 50 years old, you may qualify for a service increment.

This provides an additional monthly amount for each full year worked beyond 20 years.

What If I Become Disabled?

You may qualify for a disability pension if:

  • You are totally and permanently disabled after 10 years of service, or
  • You are injured in the line of duty and cannot perform your job.

Medical documentation is required and reviewed by the Board.

Can I Retire Before Age 50?

If you have 20 years of service but leave employment before age 50:

  • You must continue making monthly contributions at your last contribution rate.
  • Your pension payments will begin once you turn 50.

What Happens to My Pension If I Pass Away?

If you elected survivor benefits:

  • Your surviving spouse may receive 50% of your pension.
  • Dependent children may qualify under certain conditions.

It is important to keep your beneficiary forms up to date.

How Much Do I Contribute?

Active members contribute:

  • 6.5% of monthly wages
  • $1 per month to the Fund
  • An additional .5% contribution if electing survivorship benefits

Are There Cost-of-Living Adjustments (COLA)?

Cost-of-living increases are not automatic.
They may be granted by City Council or State Legislature based on inflation.

Can My Pension Be Suspended?

Your pension may be suspended if:

  • You return to City employment, or
  • Certain legal conditions apply under state law.
