About Bureau of Fire
The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire is the municipal fire department responsible for fire suppression, emergency response, and hazardous materials response serving the City of Pittsburgh.
The men and women of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire are proud to serve our community. Each year, the Bureau responds to more than 50,000 emergency incidents across the city. From structure fires and vehicle accidents to medical emergencies, technical rescues, and hazardous conditions, our personnel answer the call without hesitation. Safeguarding life, property, and the environment is not only our mission — it is our daily commitment and our privilege to serve.
Staffed by approximately 700 sworn and civilian professionals, the Bureau protects the community through direct involvement in advanced fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue, hazard mitigation, disaster response, dynamic emergency management, and proactive domestic preparedness. Our members also engage in prevention initiatives, public education, and community outreach to reduce risk before emergencies occur.
The City of Pittsburgh is geographically divided into four (4) Battalions encompassing 30 fire stations. These stations house 34 Engine Companies, 3 Quint Companies, 11 Truck Companies, and a Mobile Air Compressor Unit. The Bureau of Fire now encompasses the Borough of Wilkinsburg.
The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of service delivery and organizational culture. Through continuous investment in modern technologies, rigorous training, and evidence-based practices, the Bureau enhances its operational readiness and response capabilities to meet the evolving needs of the community.
