VISION ZERO IMPLEMENTATION: TRAFFIC CALMING PROJECT TO BEGIN ON FEDERAL STREET AT PARKHURST STREET

Federal Street in the Central Northside to Receive a Raised Crosswalk

Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce that a raised crosswalk will be implemented on Federal Street in the Central Northside. The goal of this project is to provide a safer pedestrian crossing, to prevent future crashes, and to improve the pedestrian crossing experience at this intersection.

The project will include the construction of one (1) raised crosswalk at an improved crossing location, as well as painted bump-outs to improve sight lines. Construction of new ADA ramps is underway as of Monday morning. Permanent signage will be installed to alert motorists of the approaching raised crossing.

“We’re building a city where every neighbor, no matter their age or zip code, can walk safely on our streets,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.  “This investment on Federal Street is about listening to the community and taking action to prevent crashes before they happen. That’s the heart of our Vision Zero commitment.”

Data collected indicated that more than 54% of vehicles traveling on Federal Street exceeded the posted speed limit of 25 mph. From 2020 to 2024, there have been six (6) recorded crashes at this intersection involving pedestrians, many resulting in serious injuries.

Construction work is expected to start on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, and will last one (1) day, weather permitting. A single lane closure will be required during construction, with flaggers stationed throughout the work area to allow alternating traffic. There will be periods of intermittent delays during construction. Hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Temporary “No Parking” signage will be posted throughout the corridor where work is taking place.
