TRAFFIC CALMING IMPLEMENTATION TO BEGIN ON BRYN MAWR ROAD AS PART OF VISION ZERO INITIATIVE
Upper Hill Roadway to Receive Traffic Calming Aimed at Reducing Speeding
Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce the implementation of a traffic calming project on Bryn Mawr Road in the Upper Hill neighborhood. The goal of this project is to reduce drivers’ speeds, increase pedestrian safety, and prevent crashes by installing traffic calming measures.
The project will include the construction of three (3) speed humps and one (1) speed table as well as upgrades to crosswalks and intersection safety features. These upgrades will be implemented on Bryn Mawr Road from Milwaukee Street to Iowa Street.
“Based on the data we knew that we needed to act,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “Too many people have gotten hurt on this road and I am proud to support the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure in their traffic calming efforts.”
This project was selected based on the crash history: six (6) crashes, including one (1) fatal injury, between 2020-2024. Data collected indicated that 65% of vehicles traveling on Bryn Mawr Road exceeded the posted speed limit of 25 mph, with an 85th percentile speed of 33 mph.
Construction work is tentatively expected to start on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. During construction, flaggers will be stationed through the work area to allow alternating traffic. There may be periods of intermittent delays during construction.
The duration of the project is expected to last two (2) days, weather permitting. Hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Temporary no parking signage will be posted throughout the corridor where work is taking place.
