Trail to Undergo Temporary Closures to Improve Surface Condition and Drainage

Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce the commencement of work on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail South Side segment between the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex Football Training Center and Becks Run Road/Baldwin Borough segment, to resurface the trail, remove roots causing the trail surface to buckle and improve drainage.

Milling of the trail will begin on Thursday, October 30, 2025, and is expected to finish on Friday, October 31st, weather permitting. The trail will remain accessible during this time although trail users may experience delays on Friday, the 31st. Flaggers will be available during the two days of milling. Work hours for both milling and paving will be 7 am-5 pm, although work is subject to weather delays, as needed.

Paving will last only one day and will take place on Monday November 3rd. A full closure of the trail is needed for this portion of the work. There is no on-street detour although Friends of the Riverfront and the Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy will provide a shuttle during the one-day closure.

For up-to-date information on the closure and shuttle service, visit Friends of the Riverfront  or the Great Allegheny Passage website.

The project is funded in part by a Department of Conservation and National Resources (DCNR) Grant.

“Our partnership with DCNR and Friends of the Riverfront is about more than fixing the trail surface, it’s about investing in spaces that connect people to one another and to our rivers,” said Department of Mobility and Infrastructure Assistant Director Angela Martinez. “This section of trail in particular is highly traveled and has been in need for resurfacing for quite some time. We appreciate the funding and support of our partners to improve the safety, accessibility, and the overall trail experience for everyone who enjoys Pittsburgh’s riverfronts.”
