STATEMENT ON MAGEE-WOMENS HOSPITAL NURSES VOTING TO UNIONIZE WITH SEIU HEALTHCARE PA

The nurses at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital sent a powerful message to all of us that when healthcare workers are empowered and supported, everyone benefits! The vote by a majority to unionize and join SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania marks one of the largest union elections in recent Pennsylvania history and is truly something for us all to celebrate.

This courageous step reflects the deep commitment these nurses have to their patients, their profession, and each other. By coming together with one united voice, they are standing up not only for fair working conditions and professional respect but also for the highest quality of care for the communities they serve. This is more than a union win; it’s a movement driven by compassion, unity, and the belief that dignity in the workplace is essential to excellence in care.

I applaud the Magee nurses for their leadership and solidarity, and I look forward to the future they are building. One where healthcare workers are heard, valued, and equipped to thrive. ~Mayor Ed Gainey
