PEDESTRIAN SAFETY UPGRADES BEGIN ON FORBES AVENUE AS PART OF VISION ZERO IINITIATIVE
Squirrel Hill Intersection to Be Raised to Improve Walkability and Reduce Traffic Speeds
Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce the implementation of a raised intersection treatment at Forbes Avenue at Denniston Street in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood. This safety initiative aims to increase pedestrian safety for those crossing at this busy intersection.
A raised intersection is similar to speed humps and other vertical speed control elements, they reinforce slow speeds and encourage motorists to yield to pedestrians at the crosswalk. The goal is to create a safe, slow-speed crossing and public space at minor intersections.
“With both a school and a senior living facility at this intersection, it was clear we needed to take action to better protect our most vulnerable community members,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.
This project was selected based on the crash history involving vulnerable road users (six crashes, including one pedestrian injury, over the past four years) and the high concentration of pedestrian generators in the neighborhood. The location is adjacent to the Squirrel Hill business district and Yeshiva School.
Asphalt placement is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 7th, between the hours of 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. During this time, the intersection will be inaccessible from either approach of Denniston Street. Permanent pavement markings are expected to be installed on Wednesday, October 8th.
Flaggers will be present to direct traffic during construction; however, intermittent delays may occur.
Installation of vertical elements will follow in the subsequent days. No traffic impacts are expected during this phase.
