North Avenue Signals and Safety Project Resumes Next Week
Pittsburgh, PA – The North Avenue Signals and Safety Project, a pedestrian-focused roadway safety project along Pittsburgh’s North Avenue in the Northside, is preparing to enter the next stage of construction.
Beginning on Monday, March 2, westbound traffic on North Avenue between Arch Street and Cedar Avenue will be closed for three days through Thursday, March 5 (weather dependent).
The westbound closure will be in place around the clock, enabling the contractor to construct the new sidewalks and curb extensions/bumpouts. Additionally, this closure will also allow utilities to complete work within the project area. This project is being completed in close coordination with the City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure, Department of Public Safety, Allegheny General Hospital and Pittsburgh Public Schools.
In Spring 2025, the project on North Avenue broke ground with the intention of upgrading traffic signal equipment at four intersections while improving pedestrian safety at an additional four intersections. Upgrades include higher visibility signals with back plates, controllers, communication hardware and radar detection. Similarly, pedestrian improvements include pedestrian countdown signals, audible push buttons, curb extensions/bump-outs, mid-block crossings and ADA ramps. This project was designed after a long-term need for improved safety and accessibility along this corridor was identified.
Projects like the North Avenue Signals and Safety Project are an integral part of the City of Pittsburgh’s commitment to Vision Zero, a roadway safety initiative that works to systematically reduce fatal crashes to zero. Between 2020 and 2024, there have been 29 reportable crashes along the North Ave corridor, demonstrating a clear need for intervention.
The North Avenue Signals & Safety Project is being constructed by CH&D Enterprises and inspection is being overseen by Larson Design Group.
