MEDIA ADVISORY: City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Emergency Medical Services Celebrates the Formal Launch of Whole Blood in the Field
Please join Pittsburgh EMS, UPMC prehospital services, and Vitalant as we formally launch whole blood being deployed directly in the field by paramedics across the city of Pittsburgh and celebrate those patients whose lives have already been saved by the program.
WHO: EMS Chief Amera Gilchrist, City of Pittsburgh Medical Director & UPMC Emergency and EMS Physician Dr. Lenny Weiss, EMS Division Chief Mark Pinchalk, and Vitalant Director of Transfusion Services Frances Scher
WHAT: On September 15, 2025, after a year of finalizing contracts and formalizing program procedures, Pittsburgh EMS deployed its first whole blood units onto Rescue 2. This week, blood was also deployed to Rescue 1.
