At approximately 2:30 p.m., the Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS rescue division was dispatched to the Monongahela Incline for a report that the two rail cars had stalled on the tracks.
Upon initial assessment, paramedics identified five individuals in one of the cars and twenty-four in the other who were in need of rescue. Due to the complexity of the rescue, the EMS technical rescue group was requested to assist the rescue paramedics already on scene and establish staging areas at both the upper and lower levels of the incline.
By approximately 4:30 p.m., rescue paramedics had successfully completed a rope rescue operation for all five occupants from the upper car.
The Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire also responded to assist with the rescue. Firefighters deployed a ladder truck to access and extricate passengers from the lower car, while paramedics continued to bring individuals to safety. The final occupant was removed by approximately 6:00 p.m.
All passengers were medically evaluated on scene. No injuries were reported.
