VISION ZERO IMPLEMENTATION: TRAFFIC CALMING PROJECT TO BEGIN ON LARIMER AVENUE

Larimer Avenue in Larimer to Receive Traffic Calming Elements

Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce that a traffic calming project will be implemented on Larimer Avenue in the Larimer neighborhood. The goal of this project is to increase speed limit compliance on Larimer Avenue and to reduce the occurrence of traffic crashes.

The project will include the construction of three (3) speed tables, the removal of unwarranted ‘STOP’ signs on Larimer Avenue at Shetland Street, high-visibility piano key crosswalk painting, newly painted stop bars, and daylighting to improve sight lines, which will reduce angle-type crashes. Permanent signage and pavement markings will be installed to alert motorists of approaching traffic calming elements and to clarify the one-way conditions at Shetland.

“In a safe, welcoming, and thriving Pittsburgh, no one should fear for their life just crossing the street,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “Larimer Avenue is home to families, young people, and community spaces—and it's long past time we made it safer. This project is part of our commitment to Vision Zero, and it’s one more step toward a city where every neighborhood benefits from investments in safer streets.”

Data collected indicated that more than 97% of vehicles traveling on Larimer Avenue exceeded the posted speed limit of 25 mph with motorists often traveling at 38 mph. Additionally, there have been six (6) recorded in the past five (5) years near multiple pedestrian generators (Steel City Squash, Costa Courts).

Construction work is expected to start today, Wednesday, August 6, 2025, and will last one (1) day, weather permitting. During construction, flaggers will be stationed through the work area to allow alternating traffic. There may be periods of intermittent delays during construction. Hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Temporary “No Parking” signage will be posted throughout the corridor where work is taking place.
