UPDATE: NORTH AVENUE SIGNALS AND SAFETY PROJECT ENTERS NEXT PHASE OF CONSTRUCTION
Detours to change after safety project progresses
Pittsburgh, PA – The North Avenue Signals and Safety Project, a pedestrian-focused roadway safety project along Pittsburgh’s North Avenue in the Northside, is preparing to enter the next stage of construction. In Spring 2025, the project on North Avenue broke ground with the intention of upgrading traffic signal equipment at four (4) intersections while improving pedestrian safety at an additional four (4) intersections. Upgrades include higher visibility signals with back plates, controllers, communication hardware, and radar detection. Similarly, pedestrian improvements include pedestrian countdown signals, audible push buttons, curb extensions/bumpouts, mid-block crossings, and ADA ramps. This project was designed after a long-term need for improved safety and accessibility along this corridor was identified.
Beginning on Tuesday, December 2nd a two-week westbound detour will be implemented through December 14th. This closure will be in place around the clock, enabling the contractor to work longer hours, more days, and dedicate more crews to the work. This is the first of two (2), two-week detours that were coordinated with the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Medical Services to accelerate project completion, while maintaining critical access for emergency services. A second two-week closure will take place in January. While construction takes place on the intersection bump-outs along North Avenue, pedestrian detours will be required. Construction will occur on one (1) intersection corner at a time in order to minimize impacts to pedestrian traffic.

“The City of Pittsburgh deserves safe connections to its parks and neighborhood amenities,” said Jeff Skalican, Acting Director of the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure. “As the municipal DOT for one of Pennsylvania’s largest cities, we take seriously our responsibility to make every neighborhood street safer for everyone who uses it.”
The North Avenue Signals and Safety Project is an integral part of the City of Pittsburgh’s commitment to Vision Zero, a roadway safety initiative that works to systematically reducing fatal crashes to zero. Between 2015 and 2019, there have been forty-nine (49) reportable crashes along the corridor, demonstrating a clear need for intervention.
This project is being constructed by CH&D Enterprises.
