Squirrel Hill North and Point Breeze to Receive Traffic Calming Measures Aimed at Curbing Excessive Speeds

Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce that traffic calming measures will be implemented on Shady Avenue in the Squirrel Hill North and Point Breeze neighborhoods. This initiative aims to increase speed limit compliance and provide safer roadway conditions for residents of Shady Avenue and roadway users alike.

The project on Shady Avenue will include the construction of four (4) speed tables along with pavement markings and signage to alert roadway users of the approaching traffic calming elements.

“Too many crashes and close calls have happened on Shady Avenue, and we can’t accept this as normal,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.  “By implementing these traffic calming measures, we’re protecting our kids, our seniors, and every neighbor who travels through the East End. This is how we move toward a Pittsburgh where no one loses their life simply trying to get where they’re going.”

This project was selected after a resident-requested traffic study indicated that 97% of vehicles traveling on Shady Ave exceeded the posted speed limit of 25 mph, with an 85th percentile speed of 38 mph. This corridor, Fifth Avenue to Hastings Street has had thirty (30) reported crashes of mixed severity between the years 2018 and 2024.

Construction work for both locations is tentatively expected to begin on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. During construction, flaggers will be stationed through the work area to allow alternating traffic. There may be periods of intermittent delays during construction.

The duration of construction is expected to last two (2) days, weather permitting. Hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Temporary no parking signage will be posted throughout the corridor where work is taking place.
