TRAFFIC CALMING IMPLEMENTATION TO BEGIN ON FRANCIS STREET AS PART OF VISION ZERO INITIATIVE

Neighborhood Street in Middle Hill to Receive Traffic Calming Aimed at Reducing Speeding

Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce the implementation of a traffic calming project on Francis Street in the Middle Hill neighborhood. The goal of this project is to reduce drivers’ speeds and improve pedestrian safety by installing traffic calming measures.

The project will include the construction of three (3) speed humps and upgrades of existing crosswalks to high visibility piano-key-sidewalks. These upgrades will be implemented on Francis Street between Wylie Avenue and Centre Avenue.

“I am proud to bring forth so much investment in traffic safety to areas that have been typically left behind, especially when it came to capital investments,” said Mayor Ed Gainey.

This project was selected after a resident requested traffic study concluded that a majority of motorists exceeded the posted speed limit. Data collected indicated that 51% of vehicles traveling on Francis Street exceeded the posted speed limit of 25 mph, with a max speed of 51 mph.

Construction work is tentatively expected to start on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. During construction, flaggers will be stationed through the work area to allow alternating traffic. There may be periods of intermittent delays during construction.

The duration of the project is expected to last two (2) days, weather permitting. Hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Temporary no parking signage will be posted throughout the corridor where work is taking place.
