"I’m thankful that there was no loss of human life following the devastating fire that broke out at the Jefferson Apartments in Squirrel Hill. While my heart is heavy for all those affected, I am inspired by the strength, unity, and resilience our residents displayed in the face of such hardship.
My administration is working closely with the Red Cross, Allegheny County, Councilperson Barb Warwick, and other local support agencies to align displaced residents with the resources and assistance they need during this challenging time and to ease the burdens they now face.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire, the Office of Emergency Management, and all first responders for their bravery, professionalism, and swift action in containing the fire and ensuring the safety of those affected.
From the moment the flames were extinguished, our community came together to be a village for our neighbors in need. The Sally & Howard Levin Clubhouse immediately opened its doors to provide shelter, meals, water, clothing, and vital information to displaced residents, with support from the Red Cross. CitiParks quickly stepped in, opening a local recreation center for continued shelter, while PRT buses ensured safe transportation.
Organizations such as the Salvation Army, Community Kitchen, and Levin Clubhouse provided food for everyone. Behavioral health teams from Allegheny DHS and the City Trauma Team were on the ground offering emotional support. At the same time, Neighborhood Resiliency Project, Jewish Family and Community Services, and our own Office of Refugee and Immigrant Affairs coordinated efforts and helped immigrants recover vital documents.
This response proves what we already knew: when a crisis hits, our city shows up for one another. We keep the impacted residents in our thoughts and prayers, and in the days ahead, I encourage everyone to support our neighbors and display the empathy and strength that have always defined Pittsburgh."
