Mayor Ed Gainey Joins state and local leaders to Celebrate Market Square Modernization and Downtown Progress at Ceremonial Beam Signing
Pittsburgh, PA – Today, Mayor Ed Gainey today joined, Secretary Rick Siger, Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato, and community and business leaders to celebrate the progress of Downtown Pittsburgh’s revitalization and reaching the halfway point in the Market Square modernization with a ceremonial beam signing. The event marked one year of collaborative work to reimagine the heart of Downtown, supported by a $600 million investment designed to make Pittsburgh a thriving hub of economic growth, culture, and innovation over the next decade.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the progress we’ve made in our efforts to revitalize Downtown Pittsburgh,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “This effort represents more than updated buildings and reimagined spaces. It’s about renewing the heart of our city, supporting local businesses, and creating a vibrant, welcoming space for everyone. I want to thank our residents and business community for their patience, and our state and local partners for their commitment and vision as we continue building a Downtown that reflects the spirit and future of Pittsburgh.”
The Downtown reimagining stands as a testament to the power of collaboration bringing together government, businesses, and community partners to create a Downtown that serves residents, workers, and visitors alike.
Today’s celebration also highlighted visible progress in Market Square, where construction on the north side of the Square is nearing completion. The renewed space honors the Square’s historic legacy while introducing modern amenities and enhanced safety features.
“Market Square’s construction is halfway there and right on track,” said Jeremy Waldrup, President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. “Market Square is the region’s most important public space, and this milestone reflects the collective progress transforming Downtown. This work creates a safer, greener, and more welcoming town square that will support more events, markets, outdoor dining, and year-round activity for the more than three million visitors to the Square each year.”
The updated Market Square will feature expanded outdoor dining with European-inspired furniture, planters, awnings, and umbrellas creating a cohesive yet distinctive streetscape that reflects the character of each restaurant. Local merchants are collaborating with the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and architecture firm LGA Partners to design these outdoor spaces, ensuring Market Square remains one of the region’s premier dining destinations.
When complete in April 2026, the reimagined Market Square will include improved lighting, expanded greenery, flexible event spaces, and a new pavilion designed for markets, performances, and community gatherings. The project exemplifies the strength of collaboration and marks a defining investment in the future of Downtown Pittsburgh.
