"I know many of us are facing uncertain times, wondering how to feed our families, or even ourselves, with the threat to SNAP benefits. Even with yesterday’s court rulings, service disruptions persist. We hope that this will be brief, but we want to make sure everyone is informed and has the support they need, no matter how long this lasts.
Please know you’re not alone. I, along with many others, am fighting to ensure these benefits are accessible to all who rely on them. In the meantime, we’re working to make sure no one goes without the vital support that SNAP provides to millions of people.
First, if you or someone you know is in need of food support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to local resources such as your neighborhood food banks, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, and local churches.
CitiParks Child and Adult Care After-school Program also provides after-school snack and/or dinner for participants while supplies last. This program operates in partnership with Pittsburgh Public Schools and follows their schedule. For our older residents, Citiparks Healthy Active Living Centers offer a nutritious lunch and a welcoming space to connect with others.
Please note that there’s an important change to SNAP benefits that requires recipients to work or volunteer. Even during the shutdown, it’s important to stay informed and follow any updates to keep your eligibility when benefits resume. We understand this may be an added stress, but we want to make sure you don’t lose your benefits.
For more information on additional food bank locations and answers to some questions you may have, such as how to stay eligible for SNAP benefits, visit FeedingPA.org. Call United Way at 2-1-1 or visit PA211.org to search for pantries, hot meals, and home delivery. You can also visit the state Department of Human Services website at PA.gov for more assistance options.
As we move through this challenging time, let’s look out for one another. Check in on your neighbors, share what you can, and remember, we will get through this together. Every act of kindness, every phone call, every moment of support makes a difference!”
