CITY OF PITTSBURGH CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH 

WHO:  Cydney Cooper, Acting Director of Communications—Mayor’s Office; Khalif Ali, National Opera House Board President; Colleen Cadman, AARP; and Kiki Brown, WAMO as mistress of ceremonies. 

WHAT:  Opening Ceremony for the City of Pittsburgh’s Black History Month, celebrating the National Negro Opera House.

Founded in 1941 in Pittsburgh, the National Negro Opera Company was the first African American opera company in the United States.  It was established by Mary Cardwell Dawson with the goal of promoting African American performers in the opera world, which was predominantly white at the time.  The NNOC was instrumental in breaking racial barriers within the classical music world, offering a platform for Black opera singers to showcase their talents and gain recognition.
