MAYOR ED GAINEY'S STATEMENT ON INDEPENDENCE DAY

"Today marks the 249th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Then, as now, our country was in a state of crisis, struggling under the tyranny of a government that placed power above the common interest."

"As we reel from the cruelty of Congress' passage of the Big Ugly Bill, which will deprive millions of Americans of access to  life saving medical care and food for their families and fund the unconstitutional detention of our friends and neighbors, it is easy to lose heart; but today, I encourage the people of Pittsburgh to draw strength from the principles laid out in the Declaration, and remember that fighting injustice has been part of our national identity from the start."

"Today, I'm thankful for the rights and freedoms granted to us by the US Constitution, but more importantly, I'm thankful for the ability to fight for them, and committed to remaining in that fight alongside and on behalf of the people of our City." ~Mayor Ed Gainey
