CITY OF PITTSBURGH’S DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS RELEASE PLANS AHEAD OF EXPECTED WINTER WEATHER EVENT

Pittsburgh, PA – In an abundance of caution due to the incoming inclement weather, the City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Works will deploy 60 trucks to pre-treat roads and streets tonight, January 5th, at 6 p.m.  Additionally, 70 trucks will be deployed at 6 a.m. tomorrow, January 6th.  Pittsburgh is expected to get anywhere between 2 to 8 inches Monday morning.  Residents should use caution and plan for a slightly longer commute.

Residents are asked to avoid parking vehicles on the streets to aid in the swift treatment of Pittsburgh roadways. Priority will be given to streets that allow access to hospitals, emergency routes, and public safety facilities.

“As we prepare for another winter weather event, our Public Works crews are stepping up to ensure Pittsburgh’s streets are safe and passable,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “I want to thank our dedicated crews for their hard work and urge residents to help by avoiding street parking, exercising caution on the roads, and staying inside if possible. Let’s work together to navigate these weather challenges safely.”

As a precaution, DPW will pre-emptively close the following roadways when the snow begins to fall heavily:

  • Capitol Avenue
  • Newett Street
  • Copperfield Street
  • South Negley Avenue
  • Suffolk Street
  • Rialto Street

Impacted roads will re-open on a case-by-case basis after the weather system passes. Motorists are advised not to drive around barricades.

Residents should be aware that it takes 24 hours after the snow has stopped to treat all city streets. However, if their street has not been cleared within 24 hours after the snow has stopped, residents should contact 3-1-1.
