Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Holds Promotion Ceremony at the Special Deployment Division

PITTSBURGH — Family, friends, and colleagues gathered at the Special Deployment Division building on October 28, 2024, for a Pittsburgh Bureau of Police promotion and special award ceremony.

Six officers were promoted to the rank of sergeant. Acting Chief of Police Christopher Ragland administered the Oath of Office, expressing gratitude for their unwavering commitment to the Bureau.

“All of you have demonstrated exceptional dedication, skill, and leadership. I am confident each one of you will rise to the occasion and exemplify the values we stand for."

Effective immediately, the newly promoted sergeants will begin working in their assigned duty locations.

Additionally, the Medal of Valor was presented to Master Patrol Officer Kevin Merkel, the highest honor awarded by the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.

“Officer Merkel has demonstrated his commitment to preserving life through his willingness to place the safety of others above his own. His actions exemplify the Bureau's core values and the finest traditions of the law enforcement profession,” stated Acting Chief Ragland.

In July 2024, Officer Merkel and his K9 partner Oakley responded to a request for mutual aid from the Cranberry Township Police Department to search for an armed suspect who fled the area on foot following a traffic stop. Upon arrival, Officer Merkel and K9 Oakley began tracking the suspect through the woods with a police officer from another jurisdiction. Their decisive actions were instrumental in ensuring public safety and neutralizing the threat.

Congratulations to Master Patrol Officer Kevin Merkel and the new sergeants who have accepted expanded roles within the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police!
