At approximately 4:40 p.m. a Pittsburgh Police K9 officer was responding to an in-progress call - and headed toward the Smithfield Street Bridge from Downtown - when his vehicle was t-boned in the area of Smithfield St. and Fort Pitt Blvd. The police vehicle was in emergency mode with lights and sirens activated at the time of the collision.
The officer was evaluated by medics as a precaution, but was otherwise uninjured. His K9 partner was not hurt.
The four occupants of the other vehicle were also uninjured and their vehicle was damaged, but drivable. The police unit was towed from the scene.
Per Pittsburgh Police policy, the officer will undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
The investigation is ongoing.
