SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL TRAFFIC CALMING CONSTRUCTION

Pittsburgh, PA – The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure is proud to announce traffic safety and calming measures at multiple locations across the City of Pittsburgh, as part of the Safe Routes to School program. In partnership with PennDOT, the City secured a federal grant to fund safety improvements for students who walk or bike to school.

  1. Pittsburgh Arlington Elementary
    1. Intersection improvements near Rectenwald Street and McManus Street including new ADA ramps, curb extensions and upgraded LED lighting
  2. Propel Hazelwood Elementary
    1. Two speed humps on Glenwood Avenue
    2. Pedestrian refuge island on 2nd Avenue at Alameda Street
  3. Faison Elementary Homewood
    1. Chokers/curb extensions on Tioga Street to prevent wrong-way driving
    2. Pedestrian refuge island at N Braddock Avenue and Susquehanna Street

Construction work is tentatively expected to start on Monday, July 14, 2025 with multiple crews working at each location during the next two weeks. Impacts to traffic during construction will be minimal with exception of Glenwood Avenue. During the speed hump construction, the road will be closed to through traffic, although flaggers will be stationed at each end in order to allow local traffic access to and from their residences.

Hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Temporary no parking signage will be posted throughout the corridor where work is taking place.
