VISION ZERO IMPLEMENTATION: BELTZHOOVER AVENUE TRAFFIC CALMING

Beltzhoover Avenue to Receive Traffic Calming Measures

Pittsburgh, PA – As part of the City of Pittsburgh’s Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries, the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) will implement new traffic calming measures along  Beltzhoover Avenue in the Allentown Neighborhood.

The project is designed to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance safety for all users of the street—pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike. Planned improvements include the construction of speed tables, painted splitter islands, and delineated parking lane lines. Additionally, permanent signage and pavement markings will be installed to alert drivers to the presence of these traffic calming features.

“Every neighborhood in Pittsburgh deserves streets that are safe for everyone—whether you’re walking, biking, driving, or just stepping outside your front door. This project on Beltzhoover Avenue is about protecting lives and strengthening the sense of safety in Allentown. It’s one more step toward building a city where no one has to fear for their safety just getting around their community,” said Mayor Ed Gainey

The need for traffic calming on Beltzhoover Avenue was identified through a traffic study conducted by DOMI, which found that 70% of motorists exceeded the posted 25 mph speed limit. The 85th percentile speed—a standard metric used in traffic engineering—was recorded at 32 mph, indicating that most drivers feel comfortable traveling well above the posted limit.

Construction work is scheduled to start on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, weather permitting. During construction, flaggers will be stationed throughout the work area to allow alternating traffic. There may be periods of intermittent delays during construction.

The duration of the project is expected to last two (2) days, weather permitting. Hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Temporary ‘No Parking’ signage will be posted throughout the corridor where work is taking place.

This project reflects the City’s commitment to creating safer, more livable neighborhoods through targeted infrastructure investments.
