Mount Washington to Receive Traffic Calming Measures Aimed at Curbing Excessive Speeds placeholder text.
Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh is pleased to announce that traffic calming measures is being implemented on Southern Avenue in the Mount Washington neighborhood. This initiative aims to increase speed limit compliance and provide safer roadway conditions for residents of Southern Avenue and roadway users alike.
The project on Southern Avenue will include the construction of five (5) speed tables, pavement markings, and signage to alert roadway users of the approaching traffic calming elements.
“One of the biggest goals of my administration has been to ensure that we can bring programs like Neighborhood Traffic Calming to every community,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. While we’ve made great strides in calming excessive speeds across Pittsburgh, I’m reminded especially this week during Week Without Driving that the pathway to zero traffic fatalities is as difficult as it is necessary.”
This project was selected after a resident-requested traffic study indicated that 63% of motorists traveling on Southern Avenue exceeded the posted speed limit of 25 mph, with a max speed of 72mph.
Construction work begins today, Thursday, October 2, 2025. During construction, flaggers will be stationed through the work area to allow alternating traffic. There may be periods of intermittent delays during construction.
The duration of construction is expected to last two (2) days, weather permitting. Hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Temporary no parking signage will be posted throughout the corridor where work is taking place.
