Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Works is actively responding to the ongoing winter weather event. Director of Public Works Chris Hornstein and city crews are watching the radar for the unexpected lake effect that’s causing heavy snow fall this weekend. On-call and overtime crews have been called in to assist with cleanup efforts, and all 40 snowplow trucks are currently out on the roads.
Now that we have reached plowable conditions, crews are working diligently to clear main roadways and streets before moving through neighborhood secondary roadways. Priority will be given to streets that will allow access to hospitals, emergency routes, and public safety facilities.
In addition, the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has directed all non-emergency calls to be held in order to ensure operators can prioritize communications involving emergency vehicles, allowing crews to respond to critical areas and accidents immediately.
Winter weather is expected to continue into the afternoon and evening. We ask for your patience as our teams continue their work to ensure safe road conditions. Please drive carefully if you must be on the roads, and if you do not, please stay inside to allow crews to clear roads more swiftly.
Residents should be aware that it takes 24 hours after the snow has stopped to treat all city streets. However, if their street has not been cleared within 24 hours after the snow has stopped, they should contact 3-1-1.
