Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race Presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield to Finish at Gateway Center in 2025 Amid Point State Park Construction

Pittsburgh, PA – Ten thousand runners and walkers are expected to take to the streets of Pittsburgh on Sunday, September 28, for the 48th Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.

“The Great Race is more than just a run — it’s a celebration of the strength, diversity, and spirit of Pittsburgh," said Mayor Ed Gainey. "I invite everyone, from first-time walkers to seasoned runners, to come out and be part of this amazing weekend that brings our city together.”

The predominantly downhill 10K course travels through several scenic city neighborhoods and passes five university campuses. The 5K course begins at the halfway point in Oakland and follows the same course to Downtown Pittsburgh. “Bringing the Great Race to our community is about more than hosting a 5K and 10K, it’s about creating an event that connects people from every neighborhood and background,” said Elizabeth Bliss, program manager, CitiParks Office of Special Events. “With CitiParks working alongside P3R to produce this event, we’re able to showcase the very best of Pittsburgh, from its welcoming spirit to its love of tradition. The race transforms our city streets into a place where residents, visitors, families, and athletes come together to celebrate health, community pride, and the unmatched energy of our city.”

This year a temporary adjustment to the race’s iconic finish line, due to current construction at Point State Park, will shift the finish line just steps away from the park’s entrance to Gateway Center, which will also serve as the site of the post-race festival. Aside from this change in the final stretch, the course remains unchanged, with the 5K beginning on Fifth Avenue in Oakland and the 10K starting on Beechwood Boulevard in Squirrel Hill.

“While we’ll miss finishing at Point State Park this year, Gateway Center provides a fantastic backdrop in the heart of Downtown for our finish line and post-race festival,” said Race Director Brian Katze. “The Great Race has been a beloved Pittsburgh tradition, attracting runners and walkers from 30+ states and multiple countries. This fall runners and walkers can look forward to experiencing the same historic course they know and love.”

"Our Highmark Health family of companies is proud of our longstanding history of supporting the Great Race, with Highmark celebrating its 20th year as presenting sponsor alongside Allegheny Health Network, providing crucial support to participants before, during, and after the race with on-site medical expertise,” said Kenya T. Boswell, senior vice president of community affairs for Highmark Health and president of the Highmark Foundation. “This race embodies the spirit of community health and resilience that we champion through our Highmark Bright Blue Futures program, giving our neighbors an opportunity to prioritize their health, connect with others, and experience the joy of our city. We look forward to this year’s race and its continued success."
