Pittsburgh Leaders Call on Residents to Join Citywide Pledge for Safer Streets

Pittsburgh, PA – In a united show of commitment to street safety and community well-being, Mayor Ed Gainey and City Councilmember Barb Warwick today officially signed the Vision Zero Community Safety Agreement, encouraging all Pittsburgh residents to take the pledge to use the city’s roadways responsibly and safely.

This pledge marks another key milestone in Pittsburgh’s adoption of Vision Zero, a global strategy aimed at eliminating all traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all. The initiative was formally endorsed by the City in March 2024 under the leadership of Mayor Gainey and Councilmember Warwick and includes the formation of an Intergovernmental Working Group to address the systemic causes of traffic violence.

“I’m proud to stand with Councilmember Warwick and our many partners as we sign the Vision Zero Community Agreement — a public pledge to walk, bike, and drive safely, obey speed limits, and look out for one another on our streets,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “This isn’t just about signatures — it’s about our shared values. It’s about protecting the lives of our neighbors, our children, our elders — everyone who uses our streets.”

The Community Safety Agreement states the following:

  • Fatal crashes have increased in the City of Pittsburgh by 43% since 2018. This is unacceptable, and I will help to end traffic deaths and serious injuries.
  • A third of Pittsburgh crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists occur at intersections. I will obey traffic signals and stop signs and safely share streets with people walking and rolling to their destination.
  • A person is about 70% more likely to be killed if they are struck by someone driving at 30 mph versus 25 mph. I will drive at safe speeds.
  • Driving under the influence causes an average of 4 Pittsburghers to lose their lives each year. I will always drive sober; no exceptions.
  • Wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk of fatal injury in a car crash by 45%. I will wear a seatbelt every time I travel in a car.
  • Running a red light is involved in 39% of Pittsburgh crashes. I will slow down on yellow and stop on red.

“For me, this is more than policy. It’s personal. And I’m proud to stand here as a public servant and as a mother, asking us all to commit — together — to Vision Zero,” said DOMI Director Kim Lucas
