MAYOR ED GAINEY DELIVERS ON AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROMISE WITH MAJOR INVESTMENT IN CITY NEIGHBORHOODS

Pittsburgh, PA – Demonstrating a firm commitment to expanding affordable housing, Mayor Ed Gainey today advanced his pledge to city residents by announcing funding for six transformative housing developments. These projects will be made possible through awards of low-income housing tax credits (LIHTCs) by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) during their recent board meeting.

This substantial investment represents a major milestone in the City’s effort to address the critical need for affordable housing. The awarded projects will drive new development, reduce blight, and revitalize communities across the neighborhoods of Fairywood, Carrick, Hazelwood, Brighton Heights, and Downtown Pittsburgh.

"These projects represent a meaningful investment in the future of our city and its people, by bringing much-needed affordable housing to communities all across the city. They’re more than just bricks and mortar, they’re centered on building stronger neighborhoods, and restoring opportunity for residents,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “Through strong collaboration with the Urban Redevelopment Authority and vital support from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, these developments have will now become a reality. This is an important step towards ensuring every Pittsburgh resident has access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. Creating a foundation for thriving neighborhoods and a stronger city for all.”

The PHFA has allocated over $66.5 million dollars in tax credits for the construction and rehabilitation of 1,946 rental units across Pennsylvania, with 1,900 units of those designated as affordable. The six projects in Pittsburgh include 330 total units, with 313 designated as affordable. In total, these projects received nearly $9.6 million in tax credits from PHFA, representing a substantial portion of the statewide allocation and ensuring the development of high-quality, affordable housing for Pittsburgh residents.

“I want to thank the PHFA for investing in our city. The federal LIHTC program is a vital piece of the financing puzzle that helps to spur the production and preservation of quality, affordable rental housing for low-income families throughout Pittsburgh,” said URA Executive Director Susheela Nemani-Stanger. “This funding will go a long way toward ensuring affordability and stability in our neighborhoods. We're also grateful to the developers of these projects for their commitment to meeting the growing need for affordable housing in our communities.”
