City of Pittsburgh Advances Brushton Station Study
Pittsburgh, PA – Today, the City of Pittsburgh's Department of City Planning, in partnership with Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT), announced the kick-off of the Brushton Station Equitable Transit-Oriented Development (ETOD) Study by launching the project’s first public design workshop. The Study is a first-of-its-kind project that is jointly funded by the City of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Regional Transit.
The Brushton Station ETOD Study is a community-driven planning project for a proposed new transit station located along the Martin Luther King, Jr. East Busway. Transit-oriented development is a planning approach that clusters housing, jobs, and public spaces near high-quality public transit. Emphasizing walkability and mixed uses near transit, this planning method reduces car dependence, expands mobility, and strengthens neighborhood connections.
By focusing on equity as a driving force for the project, the City and PRT will be intentional with their engagement strategy by working in tandem with the Homewood Collaborative. This partnership ensures communities that are located within the project area are prioritized to help guide the project towards equitable outcomes and deliverables.
“The Brushton Station Study exemplifies the City’s commitment to developing plans that advance community prosperity,” said Ivette Mongalo-Winston, Director of City Planning. “By collaborating with our partners at PRT, we’re ensuring that transit investment centers local residents by supporting equitable development while creating new opportunities for housing, jobs, and neighborhood amenities.”
Building on City Planning's previous work on the Homewood Community Plan, and PRT’s Wilkinsburg-Brushton Station Plan, the proposed Brushton Station will create a new access point for residents throughout Homewood and Point Breeze North neighborhoods to be within walking distance of a busway station.
Leveraging City-owned properties near the proposed station, the project team is directly engaging with local residents to develop site plans that identify an appropriate mix of housing, businesses, and community-centered designs to ensure improved transit access benefits long-time residents while also supporting inclusive and equitable growth throughout the project area.
In addition to the collaboration between the City and PRT, staff members from the City’s Department of Mobility & Infrastructure (DOMI), Permits, Licenses & Inspections (PLI), the Pittsburgh Land Bank, and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) will work with the project team to complete pre-development requirements and avoid potential obstacles.

The community engagement process will kick off with a public design workshop on Monday, April 13, 2026 from 4:30 – 7:30 PM at the Homewood-Brushton YMCA at 7140 Bennet Street. The interactive, public design workshop will allow residents to provide creative input on what they’d like to see as part of the project. The project team will then take the feedback received both during the workshop and through the project’s Engage PGH website and create draft site plans that will combine public input with urban design best practices and technical feasibility.
The study will continue through mid-2026 and will provide multiple opportunities for residents to contribute input. City agencies and partners will use the outcomes of the Brushton Station ETOD Study to guide future equitable development implementation.
