City in the Streets Initiative Returns with New Events to Foster Safe, Welcoming Communities

Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh is proud to announce the continuation of the City in the Streets initiative, a key part of Mayor Ed Gainey’s Plan for Peace, designed to build safe, welcoming, and thriving communities. This initiative aligns with the “built environment” pillar of the Plan for Peace, which advocates for a public health approach to community development.

The intention of this initiative was to bring local government directly to the people, creating an environment where residents can thoughtfully engage with City leadership and regional authorities in a block-party style event. This year, City in the Streets is adding an additional layer of focus to the event by addressing community safety concerns by creating environments that are clean, walkable, well-lit, and equipped with safe housing and recreational amenities. Research shows that neighborhoods with these characteristics experience lower crime rates and offer a more secure environment for residents.

“We are excited to continue City in the Streets and work alongside our neighbors to improve our communities,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “This initiative is a vital step in building safe spaces and give us an opportunity to meet our residents where they are, bringing city departments right to their neighborhoods.”

As part of City in the Streets, city leadership will focus services and operations in areas where poverty and violence are more prevalent, while also building trust with residents and providing essential education. The events will also serve as an opportunity to listen to the needs of the community and engage in collaborative problem-solving.

Since its launch in 2023, City in the Streets has been widely praised by community members and City staff alike. Internal surveys and feedback from participants indicate that the initiative has been an overwhelming success, with significant positive impact on neighborhoods.
