CITY OF PITTSBURGH’S DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS PREPARES FOR POTENTIAL WINTER WEATHER
Pittsburgh, PA – In an abundance of caution, the City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Public Works (DPW) is preparing for a potential winter weather event tomorrow, Saturday, December 12, in the midday. While 3-6 inches snowfall is expected, DPW is also preparing for the possibility of wintry mix and rapidly dropping temperatures causing hazardous road conditions.
DPW Streets Division is planning on 24-hour coverage beginning at 10 am on Saturday, December 13 until 6 am on Monday, December 15. Residents are to expect trucks outfitted with equipment on the road at any given time and encouraged to allow them space to operate.
All available public works crews will begin clearing steps, bridges, and city sidewalks by hand at 6 am Sunday, December 14.
In anticipation of the inclement weather, residents are advised to avoid parking on the streets, if possible, to facilitate the swift treatment of roadways. Priority will be given to streets providing access to hospitals, emergency routes, and public safety facilities.
“We are fully prepared for this weekend’s winter storm, with crews deployed, ample salt on hand, and a comprehensive plan to treat City streets throughout the event. But safety is a shared responsibility. We ask residents to make smart decisions on the roadways and, when possible, stay home until conditions improve,” said Chris Hornstein, Director of the Department of Public Works.
DPW reminds residents that it takes up to 24-hours after the snow stops falling to treat all city streets. If a street has not been cleared within that timeframe, residents are encouraged to contact 3-1-1 for assistance.
