At approximately 9:45 a.m., Pittsburgh Police from Zone 1 were dispatched to the 900 block of Kirkbride Street in the California-Kirkbride neighborhood in response to a report of a shooting.
Upon arrival, officers located an 8-year-old male with a single gunshot wound to the head. Preliminary information indicates the victim and a 7-year-old male were handling a firearm in the basement of the residence when it discharged. The 7-year-old male stated that the firearm was in his possession at the time of the incident.
Pittsburgh EMS transported the juvenile to the hospital in critical condition.
At this time, the firearm has not been recovered. Homicide detectives are conducting the investigation. The 7-year-old and a 15-year-old male, who was present at the scene, were taken to Pittsburgh Police Headquarters for further questioning.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
