At approximately 10:50 a.m., the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire responded to a one-alarm fire in the 400 block of Mapleview drive in the Banksville neighborhood.
The fire is believed to have started in the bedroom of an apartment, producing heavy smoke throughout the building. Firefighters were able to rescue an adult female and a cat from the affected unit.
Pittsburgh EMS transported the adult female to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. Medics attempted to resuscitate the cat but were unsuccessful.
A total of sixteen adults, five children, and two dogs were displaced. The American Red Cross provided temporary housing assistance and housing arrangements for those affected.
The Fire Investigation Unit is investigating and will determine the cause of the fire.
