VPU Detectives Make Three Arrests, Recover Firearms and Narcotics

Summary:

On Friday, August 23, 2024, Violence Prevention Unit (VPU) detectives, on patrol throughout the city, made three arrests, recovered three firearms, large quantities of narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and cash.

At 11 p.m., surveillance was conducted in the 2400 block of Bedford Avenue after detectives observed two males posing with firearms on social media and formulated a plan to apprehend them.

With the assistance of Narcotics, Zone 2 and South Side units, VPU arrested Ramar Davenport-Grant, 19, following a short foot pursuit. A discarded firearm was found along his flight path.

Davenport-Grant is charged with Carrying a Firearm Without a License, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Evading Arrest or Detention on Foot.

A 17-year-old male was found in possession of three bricks of crack, marijuana, a scale, and a Glock modified with a fully-automatic switch.

He was arrested and accepted into juvenile detention.

Earlier in the evening, VPU detectives working in the area of Marshall Avenue on a previous investigation, pulled over the driver of a vehicle who was acting suspiciously. A search of the vehicle yielded heroin and large quantities of crack. A firearm and an undisclosed amount of cash were also recovered.

Rashawn Austin, 35, was interviewed, arrested, and charged with Carrying a Firearm Without a License, Persons Not to Possess, and multiple drug-related offenses.

The other occupants of the vehicle were released from the scene.
