Incident Type: Arrest
Location: Zone 1
Summary:
At approximately 2:35 a.m., a Pittsburgh Police officer patrolling in Downtown observed a vehicle run a red light while travelling at a high rate of speed.
The officer initiated their lights and sirens and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver ran several more red lights, while continuing to travel at a high rate, before proceeding onto Veterans Bridge. The officer notified dispatch that the vehicle had taken off and asked them to inform Northern departments of a reckless vehicle heading their direction.
The officer proceeded at a distance in the direction of flight—northbound on I-279. Upon approach to the Hazlett Street exit, the officer saw a scene consistent with a vehicle crash on East Street. And the driver of the vehicle was attempting to flee the scene.
After a brief foot pursuit, officers took the suspect, 39-year-old Kenneth R. McKoy, into custody. While securing him, the vehicle he was driving became engulfed in flames.
Pittsburgh Fire arrived to suppress the fire. Medics arrived to evaluate McKoy—he refused any medical care.
He was transported to Allegheny County Jail.
In addition to a number of other charges, McKoy is charged with Carrying a Firearm Without a License, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Police, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Reckless Driving, and Prohibited Acts-Possession with the Intent to Deliver.
