Date: October 27, 2023
Incident Type: Commercial Fire
Location: Police Zone 5
Summary:

At approximately 6:15 a.m., the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire was dispatched to a commercial structure fire in the 800 block of Gross Street.

The building was a vehicle repair/service facility.

The exact cause of the fire is still to be officially determined by the Fire Investigation Unit, but the initial investigation points to an electric vehicle's lithium-ion battery having ignited.

Given the nature of the fire, it took nearly forty-five minutes for crews to fully extinguish. And the entire operation lasted over seven hours as firefighters followed procedures to ensure the vehicle did not continue to reignite.

The Bureau's Hazmat team was standing by throughout the operation.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.
