28th Street Bridge Outbound Lane to Close November 3, Inbound Lane Remains Open
Pittsburgh, PA – The Department of Mobility & Infrastructure (DOMI) has announced that the 28th Street Bridge will be restricted to a single lane of traffic traveling inbound/downhill beginning on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The outbound/uphill lane will be closed following a bridge inspection in coordination with PennDOT.
Inbound traffic will be maintained on the bridge with a new, long-term, single-lane configuration. Outbound traffic will be detoured on Liberty Avenue to Bigelow Boulevard via the Bloomfield Bridge to Paulowna Street. Vehicular detour signage has been added along the established detour.
In addition to the lane restriction, the southern sidewalk will be closed, and pedestrians will be required to cross 28th Street to use the northern sidewalk to continue across the bridge.
The single-lane configuration allows for continued inbound bus service and emergency vehicle access. Pittsburgh Regional Transit will be able to continue servicing all outbound 54D stops via an alternate detour using Herron Avenue.
“The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure works closely with our bridge inspection teams to understand current conditions of all City bridges. While we understand the impact this directional detour will have on residents, particularly those living in Polish Hill, the City is committed to taking decisive action when needed to ensure public safety,” said Eric Setzler, P.E., Chief Engineer for DOMI.
The City’s contracted engineering team, with oversight from PennDOT, is currently midway through the final design for the full rehabilitation of the 28th Street Bridge, tentatively scheduled to begin construction in 2028, with a full re-opening in 2030. In the meantime, the City continues to collaborate closely with PennDOT and the team of bridge inspectors to monitor and assess the condition of the bridge to ensure the safety for the traveling public.
