CITY OF PITTSBURGH KICKS OFF 2025 SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM

Pittsburgh, PA – As schools close for the summer, the City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Parks and Recreation (CitiParks) is excited to launch its annual Summer Food Service Program with a Kick-off Event on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Allegheny Commons Park – East (adjacent to Sue Murray Pool), from 10 AM to 1PM.

Event Schedule:

  • Roving Art Cart Activities: 10AM – 1PM

  • Speakers’ Remarks: 11AM – 11:45AM

  • Music & Interactive Activities: 11:45 AM – 1PM

  • Lunch for Children: 11:45 AM – 1PM

“We’re proud to continue supporting Pittsburgh’s youth during summer break, thanks to the incredible partnership of Pittsburgh Public Schools’ Food Service Division, the American Dairy Association Northeast, and the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank,” said Kathryn Vargas, CitiParks Director. “Together, we’re working to make sure no child goes hungry when school is out.”

The CitiParks Summer Food Service Program runs from June 16 through August 15, 2025, providing free, nutritious meals—including breakfast, lunch, and/or snacks—at 8 CitiParks Recreation Centers and over 30 partner locations. The program is free for all youth under age 18 and residents with intellectual disabilities up to age 21, supported by funding from the US Department of Agriculture through the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Additionally, CitiParks partners with the Pittsburgh Public Schools Food Service Division to operate a Mobile Food Truck in conjunction with the Roving Art Cart every Friday, bringing meals directly to neighborhoods in need.

“I am so proud of this crucial work CitiParks and their partners do,” said Mayor Ed Gainey. “Helping to eliminate food insecurity and feeding our children is very necessary, because no child should ever go hungry, and nutritious food should never be out of reach, no matter the barriers.”

In 2024, CitiParks served 61,919 meals through this program.

  • Breakfast: 26,995

  • Lunch: 31,531

  • Snacks: 3,393
