About Operation Weed and Seed
Operation Weed and Seed is a community-based strategy sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) designed to reduce drug and gun crime and support activities to ensure long-term neighborhood stability and safety. The strategy is developed and implemented by a steering committee comprised of neighborhood residents in partnership with the U.S. Attorney of Western Pennsylvania, the City and other public and private agencies. This partnership ensures the strategy will continue to meet the goals of the residents long after the Weed and Seed funding cycle ends. The basic components of the Weed and Seed strategy include:
- Law enforcement
- Community policing
- Prevention, intervention and treatment
- Neighborhood restoration.
The City of Pittsburgh currently has two federally-funded Weed and Seed sites: Lawrenceville and West Pittsburgh Neighborhoods including Chartiers City, Crafton Heights, Elliott, Esplen, Fairywood, Sheraden, West End and Windgap.
