(PITTSBURGH) June 25, 2013 Mayor Luke Ravenstahl today encouraged Pittsburgh residents and neighborhood groups to participate in this year’s National Night Out (NNO) celebration, to be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2013. National Night Out is a great opportunity for Pittsburgh residents, businesses and organizations to host fun events - such as picnics and porch parties - that build positive relationships between neighbors and the police officers who help to ensure the safety of our City. This year’s NNO theme is, “It’s a Beautiful Night in the Neighborhood.” The Mayor encourages participating groups to register their event on the City’s NNO webpage to receive helpful resources, including a new planning guide.
“The City of Pittsburgh has experienced a steady decline in crime rates in recent years, which wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of Pittsburgh’s neighborhood watch groups acting in partnership with law enforcement,” Ravenstahl said. “Cooperation between residents and police is vital to ensuring the safety and security of our city, and to the continued success of Pittsburgh’s Third Renaissance.”
NNO promotes residents’ involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie - sending a unified message that crime is not welcome. This year’s new planning guide provides an easy reference to help residents plan a fun, safe and family-friendly event in their neighborhood. When residents register their event, they will receive the tools and instructions needed to organize a successful celebration and a packet of useful public safety information created specifically for local community groups. Each packet includes:
Last year, more than 25 organizations participated in the City’s NNO celebration, hosting porch parties, picnics, neighborhood carnivals and more. View photos from last year’s neighborhood events here.
Mayor Ravenstahl will issue a proclamation declaring August 6, 2013, “National Night Out” in the City of Pittsburgh. All community groups participating in NNO will receive a thank you letter from the Mayor and a certificate of participation in the event.
