Medical benefits begin the first of the month following the date of hire unless otherwise stated in a union member’s collective bargaining agreement.
A new cost effective way for you to see a physician phone or video. Telemedicine can be used for minor illnesses, including flu, coughs, colds, mental health counseling and dermatology and more. It is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. All medical carriers offer this service.

Flexible Spending Account (FSA
Eligible employees of the City of Pittsburgh can enroll in the City’s Flexible Spending Account Program. This annual program allows an employee to set aside funds for medical and other qualified expenses on a pre-tax basis. The FSA uses a Pre-Paid Debt card specifically for Healthcare Related costs. Your FSA can be used towards expenses like Co-payments, Co-insurance, eye glasses, dental or orthodontia expenses.
Eligible employees may participate in the City of Pittsburgh’s dental program through Delta Dental. Available to employees at three levels of coverage:

Eligible employees may participate in the City of Pittsburgh’s vision program through Vision Benefits of America (VBA). Available to employees are three levels of coverage

Life & Disability Insurance
Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance (AD&D)
- The City of Pittsburgh provides eligible employees with basic Life and AD&D insurance. Options for supplemental life are available.
Short Term Disability/ Long Term Disability Insurance (STD/LTD)
- Eligible employees will be enrolled in the City of Pittsburgh’s STD/LTD Plan and be given an option to buy an enhanced plan.
Retirement & Pension
Eligible employees are enrolled in the City of Pittsburgh Municipal, Police, or Fire Pension Plan.

457 Deferred Compensation Plan
The City of Pittsburgh offers eligible employees the opportunity to defer compensation on a pre-tax basis into a governmental 457 Plan. A 457 plan is a voluntary non-qualified tax-deferred compensation plan that is similar to a 401K or a 403B. An employee may defer compensation into the plan on a pre-tax basis.
For example; if you earn $25,000 per year, and set aside $3,000 dollars into the plan, you will be taxed on $22,000 per year instead of $25,000 per year.
No waiting period to begin investing or rolling over a previous savings plan. (401K) and/or (403B)
There is a ceiling to how much you can invest per year. $18,000 for anyone under the age of 50. $24,000 for anyone age 50 and over.
The City of Pittsburgh offers a variety of voluntary benefits including AFLAC, Legal Services, Identity Theft Shield, and Pet Insurance.
Tuition Reimbursement Program

Transportation Fringe Benefits Program
This benefit is offered to help employees lower taxes on income used to pay for public transportation (bus passes) and parking fees.
