Carnegie Trees 2013: Embracing the Art of Play

Event Description: Enjoy the sights and smells of six 20-foot Colorado spruce trees lining the Hall of Architecture. Each tree is adorned with handcrafted ornaments that celebrate the holiday season and art of play. Exhibit open December 5, 2013 through January 12, 2014.

Passive House Alliance of Western PA: PHAUS Midtown Passive House

Event Description: In this meeting of the Passive House Alliance Western Pennsylvania Chapter, Nathan St.Germain will present on the design of Colorado’s first Certified Passive House.

Passive House is both a building energy performance standard and a set of design and construction principles used to achieve that standard. This standard is the most stringent building energy standard in the world: buildings that meet the standard use 80 percent less energy than conventional equivalent buildings. Houses are designed to maintain near constant indoor temperature without adding much energy for heating and cooling. Continuous mechanical ventilation of fresh filtered air assures superb air quality and comfort. The standard has emerged from Germany and is now used in more than 65,000 buildings throughout Europe.

Nathan St.Germain, Principal of Studio St.Germain, is a Certified Passive House Consultant and serves on the Board of Directors for the Western Pennsylvania Passive House Alliance Chapter.

Silent City: On Listening, Noise, and Nature in Urban Environments

Guest Speaker: Abby Aresty

In the coming months, the Center for Sustainable Landscapes will come alive with a symphony of local, natural sounds. The sounds will evolve throughout the day, change with the seasons, and transform with the elements. In July 2013, sound artist Abby Aresty moved to Pittsburgh to begin work on this project; she has been gathering the sounds of Pittsburgh ever since. In this talk, Aresty will discuss biophilia in terms of sound, silence, and urban listening. In this context, she will share her inspirations for and development of this site-specific sound art installation, Of Earth and Sun.

2014 Landis Lecturer

EBie Awards - Call for Entries Open

Zero Landfill

Event Description: Zero Landfill Pittsburgh is an annual sustainability event. On March 28th and April 4th, local design firms are welcome to bring their outdated samples to Guardian Self Storage, from 12-3pm.
We will sort them and make them available for free to the public from 12-3pm on March 29th & 30th, as well as on April 5th.
For the past two years Zero Landfill Pittsburgh redirected 14,000 pounds of materials from the landfill and into the hands of artists, educators, crafters and individuals.

Seasonal Camps at Phipps Conservatory (ages 2-9)

Each camp day includes a healthy plant-related snack.
