Commission on Human Relations

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” When I was younger, I sang right along with the 5th Dimension when I heard them singing these words because I loved the melody! It wasn’t until later in life that I realized this sentence from the Declaration of Independence was a most powerful statement and, what I believe, the standard upon which the Constitution of the United States was written. That same sentence is the cornerstone of the Pittsburgh Commission on Human Relations, for our task is to ensure that the people who live, work and visit the City of Pittsburgh are treated civilly, equally; are treated fairly in accordance to discrimination laws; at work, in obtaining housing, in receiving public accommodations and in community relations.

Our assignment as investigators and enforcers is also to resolve discrimination issues as well as to educate the public concerning their rights under these laws. The Commission continues a work it started over 50 years ago: to ensure that the people receive their unalienable rights of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” in its task to eradicate discrimination from the very fiber of our City. I ask that you aid the Commission in this endeavor by choosing to become more aware of the ever cunning modes of discrimination, by choosing to say no to people, organizations and businesses that you may believe practice discriminatory treatment, and by choosing to report these unfair practices to our agency.
